I would like to point out before I start writing what my thoughts were on this movie, is that I knew absolutely nothing about Sherlock Holmes. I've never read any of the books or not even read about Sherlock on Wikipedia when I got bored at school (surely everyone once has went to wikipedia when bored). So in other words, I was going in blind, as a complete newcomer to the character and the world of Sherlock Holmes. That's why anything comparing the movie and it's source material won't be mentioned, because I don't know any of it!
Watson: She was the only adversary who ever outsmarted you. Twice. Made a proper idiot out of you.
Now, now I have got that out of the way, onto the actual movie. As with many films people watch, this film was recommend to me by a good friend of mine, so I naturally bought and watched it, not really sure what to expect.
Holmes: You have the grand gift of silence, Watson. It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.
The film is one of the those films that you have to remember exactly what happens in previous scenes, as these moments key in to the future of the film. And I'll tell you something, it will certainly take you a few viewings of this film to remember all the details! It's a very clever film and you will finish the film and think: "Most of what just happened is a bit of blur, but boy it was great!"
Holmes: It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.
This was also the first film I saw that featured Robert Downing Jr. other than in the Iron Man Series. I cannot praise him enough - he was fantastic in this film. He brought a lot of energy into some scenes, and his quick talking witty side to others. His partner in the film, John Watson played by Jude Law, was also great, bringing a sense of order into the otherwise hectic ways of Holmes himself. Both of these characters are extremely good, with a lot of great acting, great accents and they really do bounce off each other quite well, which is apparently improved upon in its sequel.
Watson: It does seem a little far-fetched at times, making these grand assumptions based on such tiny details... Holmes: Well that's not exactly true, is it? The little details are by far the most important.
As you can also see throughout this article, the film features lots of interesting and very clever quotes. A quick look at some quote websites for the film and some of the original stories, there are hundreds and hundreds of quotes to er...quote from, so I'm looking forward to hearing what quotes they sneak into the sequel, considering they sneak in a lot of quotes into this one.
Irene: Why are you always so suspicious? Holmes: Should I answer chronologically, or alphabetically?
One quick note - this film doesn't feature any bad language. I'm getting fed up of more and more films adding bad language and swearing (I'm looking at you Transformers!) why? I hear enough of it in life as it is, I don't want to hear it films too. Like Iron Man, you don't need bad language for a good film. This is another great example.
Watson: [to Constable Clark] You boys have done an excellent job at obliterating any potential evidence. Holmes: Yes, but they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
The ending I especially like as well. It's one of cleverest endings I have seen in a film in recent years. I won't spoil it here, but you will certainly like the film even more when you see it.
Holmes: There's nothing more elusive than an obvious fact.
The great thing about seeing a film years after it was released, is you don't have long to wait for a sequel, the next film, named Game of Shadows, is out, and a third is currently in production. I can't wait to see it! As a sequel to one of the cleverest, most well written films I have seen in years, I have high hopes for the sequel. [Image: Excellent Rating]
